What to wear to your session, and what to leave at home

July 2, 2026

A couple standing together in soft evening light

The question I get more than any other, usually about a week out, is some version of “what on earth do we wear.” Here is the whole answer.

Start with the fabric, not the colour

Soft, movable fabrics photograph beautifully because they respond to wind. Linen, cotton, anything with a bit of drape. Stiff and structured garments hold their shape and read as flat in photographs, especially outdoors where everything else is moving.

Colours that sit well in Nova Scotia light

  • Warm neutrals. Cream, oat, soft white, camel, and dusty olive all sit naturally against fields and shoreline.
  • Muted tones over bright ones. Saturated colours reflect onto skin. A vivid red shirt will put a red cast on the face of whoever stands next to it.
  • Coordinate, do not match. Pick two or three tones and let everyone pull from those. Identical outfits read as a uniform.

What to leave at home

Large logos, dense small patterns, and brand new shoes. Whatever you wear, you will be walking through grass in it, so wear something you can actually move in.

If you are thinking about your outfit during the session, it is the wrong outfit.

And if you are still stuck, send me photos of two options. I answer these all the time and I genuinely do not mind.
